Dominance — share of a defined basket, not of "the total crypto market cap".

Current definition dom-v1. Charts stamped with it were computed by src/metrics/dominance.py, and every value plotted for a past date could have been computed on that date.

Definition and failure modes

Say this plainly on the methodology page: this is not the BTC.D everyone else quotes. There is no free source for true total market cap — CoinGecko's /global/market_cap_chart is PRO-only. So we define our own basket, publish its constituents, and report share within it.

Basket: Coin Metrics community CapMrktEstUSD, chain-variant rows removed. Measured against CoinGecko's live total on 2026-08-05 it covered 99.4%, putting BTC's share within +0.28pp of the quoted BTC.D. That is a calibration point, not a guarantee — we cannot validate the spread historically without paid data, and the methodology page must say so.

Membership evolves: an asset joins the basket the day its data starts. That is correct — it mirrors how a real total behaves and avoids survivorship bias from back-filling today's winners into 2019.

Version history

Newest first. Each entry says what changed and whether values that had already been published moved with it, followed by the sentence from the module that decided the verdict.
