Multiple of each asset's own price on 2010-08-22, the first date every series in the cohort exists. Week-ending closes, because the cohort does not share a trading calendar and a daily grid would be mostly holes. Total return is NOT included: the S&P line is the index, so it understates a dividend-reinvesting holder by roughly two points a year, and the metals pay nothing. One start date is one experiment — a reader who picks a different one gets a different answer, which is the honest weakness of every chart of this kind.

Every value plotted for a past date could have been computed on that date. Normalised series expand their window rather than scaling against the full history, so nothing here is drawn using information that did not exist yet — which is also why the early years of a normalised series are dropped rather than shown against a range of one.
